The server at Alteño convinced my mom and me to try a dish we wouldn’t normally choose on our own—but one bite sent us straight into culinary ecstasy. It wasn’t just any sweet potato; this was a Michelin-starred chef’s reimagined childhood street food, agave-roasted with caramelized edges and whipped sweet ricotta—an unlikely combo that somehow worked like a scene straight out of Ratatouille. Sitting in that packed restaurant on a Tuesday night, I couldn’t believe this place had been hiding in plain sight in Cherry Creek North, an upscale Denver neighborhood just half an hour from my doorstep.
Located on Denver’s southeast side, this neighborhood has evolved far beyond its reputation as just a luxury shopping district. It’s a vibrant lifestyle destination where world-class dining, art, wellness, and nature collide within walking distance.
During my visit, I found myself exploring David Yarrow photography exhibitions, taking a ceviche-making class and soaking in the nearby Denver Botanic Gardens—discovering a neighborhood that invites you to explore, unwind, and savor every moment.

Upscale Dining
Alteño

Alteño was hands-down the highlight of my Cherry Creek visit. Beyond that unforgettable sweet potato dish, the contemporary Mexican menu is full of surprises, many inspired by Michelin-starred chef and owner Johnny Curiel’s childhood in Mexico City. The interactive guacamole (which you mix yourself tableside) was seriously addictive, and the creamy enchiladas suizas – served sizzling in a cast-iron skillet – were incredible.
The menu is built for family-style sharing across four courses, and the staff couldn’t have been more helpful, guiding us through the options and sharing backstories behind each dish. Reservations are a must—this place fills up even on weeknights. Expect to spend $50–$100 per person for a meal that’s totally worth it.

Toro Latin Kitchen & Lounge

Located inside Hotel Clio, Toro Kitchen & Lounge is an upscale Pan-Latin restaurant by Chef Richard Sandoval. I tried both dinner and brunch here, and it didn’t disappoint. Dinner highlights included blackened tuna tacos, dry-aged rib-eye, and lobster quesadillas. For brunch, they offer a $50 bottomless option (weekends only) with dishes like huevos rancheros and pork belly tacos, paired beautifully with their signature mango mimosas. They also offer breakfast (daily) and lunch (Monday-Friday).
Casual Favorites
North Italia
North Italia is a lively spot that serves handmade pasta and pizza from scratch daily. Even on a Monday night, it was packed. My mom ordered the Tortelloni al Pomodoro while I had the Lumache alla Norcina—both were fantastic. Pair it with a glass of Chianti, and you’re set.
Blue Island Oyster

For fresh seafood flown in from their own Long Island farms, Blue Island Oyster Bar nails it. The clam chowder was the best I’ve had in Colorado. I recommend trying their power lunch, which includes an appetizer, an entree and a freshly baked cookie.
Cocktails & Bars
Rare Bird

Perched atop the Halcyon, Rare Bird offers killer views of the city skyline and the Rockies. It’s the kind of rooftop bar you want to linger at, with cozy couches, heaters for cooler nights, and standout craft cocktails perfect for golden hour. I recommend trying the Olde Town Road, a refreshing gin-based cocktail with peach liqueur and ginger beer.
B&GC

My mom and I found this hidden speakeasy by chance, and I’m so glad we did. Tucked inside the old Cherry Creek Post Office, B&GC feels straight out of the 1920s with its moody lighting, vintage flair, and secret entrance that’s half the fun to find.
Once inside, we were seated in a corner booth surrounded by mirrors and eclectic art that had my mom constantly snapping photos. The cocktails are inventive and complex—I had the Rizz (Pisco, pistachio cream liqueur, lemon, egg white) and my mom loved her Passion Fruit Caipirinha. You’ll need a reservation, which you can make by phone, but if you’re staying at the Halcyon, they can help you get in.

What to Do in Cherry Creek North
Explore Local Galleries

My mom is a photographer, so we had to explore several of Cherry Creek’s impressive galleries. Right next to Hotel Clio is Atelier by Relévant Galleries, currently showcasing iconic photographs by world-renowned photographer David Yarrow. The Scottish artist creates epic, cinematic shots featuring wildlife and famous models, often staging elaborate scenes shot in the American West or Namibia’s Skeleton Coast. This gallery truly feels more like a museum, enhanced by knowledgeable and welcoming staff. They’ve also opened a sister gallery featuring mixed media and celebrity screenprints from other artists right down the street.
We also recommend checking out Clayton Lane Fine Arts, which features eclectic artwork from over 50 international artists, and the Masters Gallery for more contemporary artwork and sculpture.

Take a Fitness Class

If you want to experience Cherry Creek North like a local, try one of the many fitness classes. Health and wellness are central to the neighborhood’s culture, evident in everything from the restaurant menus to the numerous spas and fitness studios. Many studios offer your first class free, and if you’re staying at the Halcyon, their Wellness Pass gives you access to partner studios.
My mom and I rarely hit the gym on vacation, but we decided to try a barre class at Barre 3. Neither of us had done barre before – it’s a mix of pilates, yoga, and ballet. The class was challenging but accessible for all levels, with modifications available for injuries or joint issues. We definitely felt the burn for days afterward, but it was worth experiencing this key part of Cherry Creek’s wellness-focused lifestyle.

Treat Yourself to a Spa Day
Whether you take a fitness class or not, a spa visit is essential for the full Cherry Creek North wellness experience. The neighborhood is packed with options, from traditional spas offering massages and facials to high-end med spas—and plenty that fall somewhere in between.
I booked the Royal Treatment at Face Foundrie, a customized facial that blends advanced techniques like oxygen infusion and hydradermabrasion to target whatever your skin needs most. It was comprehensive, relaxing, and left me absolutely glowing. With so many ways to unwind and recharge, Cherry Creek’s spa scene is reason enough to spend an afternoon here.

Visit the Botanic Gardens

Just a quick drive from Cherry Creek, the Denver Botanic Gardens is hands-down one of the best things to do in the city. Set on 24 acres, the gardens are beautifully curated with diverse ecosystems, art installations and peaceful paths that make you forget you’re in the middle of Denver.
The new Freyer–Newman Center celebrates the intersection of science and art, housing everything from botanical classrooms and rotating galleries to the Helen Fowler Library, herbaria, and even a cozy coffee shop. Many features are free to the public, and admission includes access to film screenings and special exhibits.
In the summer, the gardens really come alive with their Summer Concert Series hosted at the UMB Bank Amphitheater. For a more laid-back vibe, check out Evenings al Fresco, where local musicians play as you wander through the blooms. It’s the perfect addition to a day of exploring or relaxing in Cherry Creek—nature, art and music all in one beautiful place.

With over 70 days of outdoor events and festivals, Cherry Creek North transforms into a vibrant summer destination. Where to Stay in Cherry Creek
Hotel Clio

Hotel Clio is a boutique luxury hotel right in the heart of Cherry Creek North’s shopping and dining district, home to the acclaimed Toro Latin Kitchen & Lounge that I mentioned earlier. The hotel has a buzzing energy (literally—there are bees on the roof making the hotel’s own honey) that makes you want to linger in the lobby with a cocktail and chat with whoever’s nearby—whether it’s a fellow guest or one of the friendly staff.
The team is exceptional: warm, knowledgeable, and always one step ahead, making you feel genuinely cared for. With valet parking and even cars available to book for a quick trip to the nearby Botanic Gardens, getting around is easy and hassle-free.
The hotel also offers fun on-site experiences for guests, like top-shelf tequila tastings and hands-on ceviche-making classes—both of which I highly recommend, especially as a pre-dinner treat before dining at Toro Kitchen.

The Halcyon

The Halcyon is a modern luxury hotel that truly lives up to its motto of being “unhooked from the ordinary.” What made it stand out to me was how it didn’t just give us a place to stay—it gave us access to the neighborhood in a way that felt personal and curated.
They provide valet parking and a surprising number of complimentary guest amenities that you’ll discover in your welcome pamphlet. One of the coolest features is the Gear Garage, where you can borrow seasonal outdoor equipment like snowshoes, sleds, cruiser bikes, and even longboards. They also have Piaggio scooters you can take for a spin, board games for cozy nights in the lobby, vinyl records to borrow for your room (each room has a record player) and even a virtual reality Oculus setup.
Between that, the Wellness Pass that gets you into nearby fitness studios, the rooftop bar Rare Bird, and the hidden speakeasy downstairs, staying here felt like having the keys to the neighborhood—and all the best ways to enjoy it.
