In British Columbia, Canada, the wild landscapes of the Cariboo region have a way of jolting travelers out of routine and into adventure. One moment you’re gripping the side of a whitewater raft as rapids explode around you. The next, you’re soaking in a hot tub beneath a blanket of stars while horses graze nearby.

For three city women seeking equal parts excitement and renewal, this journey through British Columbia’s rugged interior delivers both.

Dark clouds gather above the Thompson River as our guide yells over the roar of the rapids.

“Hang on tight with both hands!”

Our raft surges forward into churning waves and frothing whirlpools. Water slams into us from every direction as we plunge through the canyon. We may be dressed in bright yellow slickers, but nothing shields us from the sheer force of British Columbia’s legendary whitewater.

The experience is exhilarating.

Located near the tiny village of Lytton, about three hours northeast of Vancouver, Kumsheen Rafting Resort remains one of British Columbia’s premier rafting destinations. The resort sits high above the Thompson River in a dramatic canyon landscape that feels more desert Southwest than stereotypical Canada.

Today, the property offers rafting excursions ranging from family-friendly floats to adrenaline-filled expeditions through Devil’s Gorge. Guests can stay overnight in canvas cabins, teepees, RV sites or traditional campsites while enjoying resort amenities that include a pool, restaurant, hiking trails and outdoor games.

For us, the rafting adventure proves both invigorating and empowering. Age and limited swimming ability matter far less than enthusiasm and a willingness to embrace the wild ride.

After all, British Columbia adventure travel is not reserved solely for the young.

From the river canyons near Lytton, we continue north into the Cariboo, one of British Columbia’s historic ranching regions. Here, rolling grasslands stretch toward distant mountain peaks and gravel roads disappear into endless wilderness.

Near the community of Clinton lies Echo Valley Ranch & Spa, a luxury wilderness retreat blending western ranch culture with Thai-inspired wellness.

Set on 160 acres surrounded by forests, canyons and mountain ranges, the ranch feels wonderfully remote. Horses graze across open fields while log cabins nestle into the hillsides. The air smells of pine and sagebrush and silence settles deeply into the landscape.

It’s exactly the sort of place travelers dream about when imagining rural Canada.

The atmosphere at Echo Valley immediately feels personal and relaxed. Staff greet guests by first name, dogs roam happily around the property and visitors quickly bond over shared meals and outdoor adventures.

With accommodation for only a small number of guests, the ranch maintains an intimate atmosphere more reminiscent of an upscale summer camp than a traditional resort.

Farm-to-Table Dining in the Wilderness

At the heart of the ranch sits Dove Lodge, where meals become an experience of their own.

Echo Valley continues to emphasize farm-to-table cuisine using locally sourced ingredients, ranch-raised meats and produce grown on the property.

Breakfasts and lunches are relaxed and hearty, while dinners feel elevated without becoming pretentious. One evening may feature Western barbecue flavors while another highlights Thai specialties inspired by the owners’ cultural heritage.

That East-meets-West fusion shapes much of the ranch experience.

Traditional Thai influences appear throughout the property, especially inside the ranch’s renowned Baan Thai Spa, which continues to draw wellness travelers from around the world.

Hiking, Horses and Wilderness Calm

While one friend heads directly to the spa, another and I lace up our hiking shoes and follow trails winding through the property.

We pass trout ponds, trickling creeks and open meadows bursting with wildflowers. Border collies race joyfully alongside us while distant mountain ridges frame the horizon.

Later, I decide it’s finally time to embrace my inner cowgirl.

Horseback riding remains one of Echo Valley’s signature activities, with guided rides suitable for beginners through experienced riders.

My horse, appropriately named Shadow, patiently carries me through trembling aspens and rolling grasslands while more experienced riders canter ahead across open meadows.

At first, I’m nervous.

By the end of the ride, I’m completely mesmerized by the rhythmic clip-clop of hooves and the meditative stillness of the Cariboo wilderness.

I also discover muscles I didn’t know existed.

What makes the Cariboo especially appealing is its sense of space. Unlike many popular tourism destinations, there are no crowds competing for viewpoints or reservations. Here, travelers can slow down, breathe deeply and reconnect with nature at their own pace.

Whether casting a fishing line into a quiet lake, watching the sunset paint distant mountains in shades of gold and pink or simply sitting beside a crackling campfire, the region offers a rare luxury in modern travel: the chance to truly unwind and be present.

After a day of hiking trails, horseback rides and wilderness exploration, I’m ready for a different kind of adventure, one focused on restoration rather than adrenaline.

Thankfully, relief awaits at the Baan Thai Spa.

Echo Valley’s authentic Thai spa experience remains one of the most unique wellness offerings in Canada.

Inside the peaceful treatment rooms, traditional Thai massage combines stretching, pressure point work and deep muscle therapy. My therapist seems impossibly small until she skillfully untangles every ache created by horseback riding and rafting.

The experience feels transformative.

Morning wellness sessions continue the restorative theme. Guests can participate in stretching and movement classes inspired by ancient Thai healing traditions, or simply relax beside the pool, in the sauna or beneath impossibly star-filled skies.

At night, our group gathers in the outdoor hot tub, reflecting on friendship, aging, adventure and the importance of occasionally escaping everyday life.

The Cariboo delivers exactly that kind of escape.

In this remote corner of British Columbia, Canada, rapids still roar through ancient canyons, horses still wander open grasslands and weary travelers still discover renewal beneath vast western skies.
