Growing up in the Colorado mountains, my Fourth of July celebrations were filled with fond memories. Despite the state’s breathtaking landscapes, many summers were marked by fire bans, leaving fireworks a rare spectacle. However, moving to Chicago transformed my experience. With biweekly summer fireworks, the vibrant displays became a staple of celebration, making the Fourth of July a particularly exhilarating event.

Evening festivities typically include a spectacular fireworks display, although alternative celebrations like laser shows are sometimes held due to fire restrictions. Aspen’s community-focused atmosphere, stunning natural setting, and emphasis on sustainability make it a memorable destination for Independence Day celebrations.

I grew up in Colorado, a state known for fires. Many Fourth of July celebrations didn’t have fireworks because it was too dangerous (mostly in the mountains – fireworks are still common in Denver). Before you plan your trip, check the fire danger levels in Colorado (the same applies for other fire-prone states).

Michigan summers are truly unparalleled. After spending the past two years here, I can’t imagine being anywhere else during this season. With its stunning lakes, abundant fresh fruit, and spectacular firework shows, Michigan has become my favorite place to celebrate the Fourth of July.

Mackinac Island is an iconic place to visit regardless, but celebrating 4th of July there is like no other. The day is filled with a vibrant parade, live music, and patriotic performances. Visitors can enjoy the stunning fireworks display over Lake Huron from various vantage points, while the island’s car-free environment encourages biking, hiking, and leisurely exploration.

The local cuisine, especially the famous fudge, adds to the enjoyment. With community picnics, historic tours, and a relaxed pace, Mackinac Island provides an unforgettable Independence Day experience.

7. Chicago, Illinois

When I was 18, I moved to Chicago, where there was no shortage of fireworks over Lake Michigan every Wednesday and Saturday throughout the summer. Of course, they took it up a notch on the Fourth of July and dazzled the city with an even more spectacular fireworks show.

Chicago’s Navy Pier is the focal point for Independence Day festivities in the Windy City. The pier hosts a day-long celebration with live music, performances, and family-friendly activities.

The fireworks display over Lake Michigan is a stunning spectacle, best viewed from the pier, nearby beaches, or aboard a lake cruise. I was lucky enough to watch it from my apartment window, something I’ll never forget. The Grant Park Music Festival also presents a patriotic concert in Millennium Park.
