France, Italy and Monaco in One Day: A Seamless, Stress-Free Itinerary

One of the things I love most about traveling in Europe is how easy it is to cross international borders. Along the Mediterranean coast, France, Italy, and Monaco sit so close together that exploring all three in a single day is surprisingly possible.

What was it like? I started my morning in the peaceful town of Menton, crossed into Italy for lunch, wandered through glamorous Monaco in the afternoon, and returned to Nice by evening. Undoubtedly, it became one of my most unique travel experiences.

In the following itinerary, I’ll share how I explored three nations in a single day, along with helpful tips for making this trip smooth, efficient, and truly memorable.

Morning in Menton, France

I began my day in Menton, one of the most charming towns on the French Riviera. Located between the Mediterranean Sea and the mountains near the Italian border, Menton is often called the “Pearl of France” for its colorful architecture, pleasant climate, and relaxed atmosphere.

The town was already glowing under the morning sunshine as I wandered along the waterfront. Compared with the busier destinations along the Côte d’Azur, Menton felt perfectly peaceful and authentic.

One of my first stops was Église du Sacré-Cœur, an elegant church located in the heart of Menton. Built in the early twentieth century, the church features a striking façade and a beautifully decorated interior that reflects the city’s heritage.

Before leaving, I stopped at a local bakery for a flaky pastry and a rich cup of hot chocolate—a simple but so “French” breakfast.

Noon in Sanremo, Italy

After a short train ride, I crossed my first border of the day and arrived in Italy. One of the most fascinating things about this journey was how quickly the atmosphere changed despite traveling only a short distance.

Located along the Ligurian coast, Sanremo is known for its seaside scenery and Mediterranean lifestyle. The city has long attracted artists and travelers seeking sunshine and beautiful coastal views.

Afternoon in Glamorous Monaco

By mid-afternoon, another scenic train journey brought me to Monaco. Although small in size, the principality is world-famous for its luxury lifestyle, stunning coastline, and elegant architecture.

The atmosphere here was noticeably different from both France and Italy. Everything seemed polished, sophisticated, and effortlessly glamorous.

Casino de Monte-Carlo

My first stop was the iconic Casino de Monte-Carlo, a landmark I had seen countless times in photographs but was even more impressive in person.

As I approached the grand building, I found myself slowing down to take in every detail—from the ornate Belle Époque architecture to the perfectly maintained gardens surrounding it. The atmosphere felt effortlessly sophisticated, with luxury cars gliding past and visitors gathering to admire one of Monaco’s most famous sights.

Prince’s Palace of Monaco

At the highest point of Monaco, the Prince’s Palace has served as the residence of the Grimaldi family for centuries. Visitors can experience the palace’s elegant exterior and enjoy panoramic views overlooking Monaco and the Mediterranean coastline.

As the afternoon gradually turned to evening, luxury yachts sparkled in the harbor, and the city began to glow with thousands of lights. The view was simply breathtaking—a dazzling display of wealth, beauty, and Riviera elegance that felt almost surreal.

Port of Fontvieille

Located at the foot of long cliffs, Port of Fontvieille is one of Monaco’s most scenic marinas. Luxury yachts line the harbor while shops and restaurants create a lively waterfront atmosphere. Walking along the marina offered a fascinating glimpse into Monaco’s luxurious lifestyle and stunning coastal setting.

Saint Nicholas Cathedral

Before leaving Monaco, I visited Saint Nicholas Cathedral, a beautiful sanctuary tucked away in the heart of the old town. After hours of exploring the city’s glamorous landmarks, the cathedral offered a quiet moment to slow down, recharge, and simply appreciate the beauty around me.

Evening in Nice, France

As evening fell, I returned to Nice and completed my journey across three countries. Rather than rushing back to my hotel, I spent some time wandering through the city center, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere that filled the streets long after sunset.

Standing in Place Masséna, I watched locals and visitors stroll beneath the glowing lights while trams quietly passed through the square. The illuminated artworks floating above the avenue gave the city an almost dreamlike quality.

The Nice-Menton-Sanremo-Monaco loop runs almost entirely on regional trains, and the connections are frequent enough that a rigid schedule isn’t necessary. Trains from Nice to Menton take about forty minutes, and the short hop from Menton across the Italian border to Sanremo or from Menton to Monaco runs on the same regional line, so the whole day can be done without a car or a booked tour.
