For an overview of Australian arts, a good place to start is the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Founded in 1871, this well-respected gallery houses a wide array of art, from classic Australian and European works to modern and contemporary, along with Asian, Aboriginal, and Torres Strait Islander art.

Best of all, admission is free.

Tip: On Wednesdays, check out Art After Hours, when the gallery stays open until 9 p.m.

Next, head to The Rocks, a historic area under Sydney Harbor Bridge near Circular Quay. This area has a lot for art lovers. A must-visit is the Museum of Contemporary Arts Australia (the MCA), which has a prime harborside spot overlooking the ferries at Circular Quay.

The MCA is the home of modern art in Australia and has an ever-changing exhibition program.

Although it has the word “contemporary” in its name, the MCA has pieces spanning decades, including Indigenous Australian works, international modernist pieces, and cutting-edge installations from new artists.

The MCA draws almost 1 million visitors annually.

Tips: Buy tickets at their website ahead of time. Once you arrive, ask about the free guided tours for ticketed guests. The MCA Store is worth a stop for art and design-inspired gifts.

If you’re looking for artwork to take home, The Rocks has several notable galleries, including the Argyle Gallery, which showcases Australian and Aboriginal art and the Australian Art & Design (AAD) Gallery, which promotes original art by local Australian and international artists.

The Australia Museum is the oldest museum in Australia and has more than 21 million items, including a sizeable paleontological collection with fossils of extinct Australian megafauna and dinosaurs.

Don’t miss the First Nations galleries, which provide an understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. This family-friendly museum has programming for kids in their learning and play space.
