Cairo, Egypt’s sprawling capital, is a heady mix of antiquity and adrenaline, where ancient pyramids overlook bustling highways, and centuries-old bazaars hum alongside modern cafes.
For first-time visitors, Cairo can feel overwhelming, but it’s also electrifying, unforgettable, and deeply human. This beginner’s guide is designed to help you experience Cairo’s must-see attractions. Here are nine activities to consider on your trip to Cairo, whether you are a returning visitor or it is your first time.
1. The Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx

The Pyramids of Giza are often the first thing visitors associate with Egypt, and rightfully so. These 4,500-year-old marvels never disappoint. Seeing them in person is a surreal experience, especially when they appear suddenly in the distance against the backdrop of the modern city.
That juxtaposition of old and new never gets old; each time we drove across Cairo, spotting the pyramids in the background felt like a scene from a movie.
We paid extra to go inside the Great Pyramid, and although the chamber is bare and the climb is steep and claustrophobic, the experience was well worth it. A fellow traveler also attended the pyramids’ evening light and sound show and said it added a theatrical, magical element to the site.
As for the Sphinx, it was a bit smaller than expected and the area was very touristy. However, it was still a great bucket list item. One practical tip: bring your own toilet paper and some small change, bathroom access at this site (and many others) comes with a fee, and amenities are basic.

2. The Grand Egyptian Museum

This modern and expansive museum is a treasure trove of pharaonic history. Though still in soft launch mode, it houses artifacts from across Egypt’s dynastic history and is designed to become one of the largest archaeological museums in the world.

Of all the museums we visited, if I had to recommend just one, it would be this one. The layout, lighting, and curated spaces made it a highlight of our trip.

3. The Egyptian Museum (Downtown Cairo)

This iconic pink building near Tahrir Square holds thousands of ancient relics, including Tutankhamun’s famed golden mask (though some pieces are being transferred to the GEM).
The building may feel a bit old-fashioned, but the sheer volume of treasures is mind-boggling. Personally, I loved exploring the maze-like galleries full of artifacts. It’s the kind of museum where you can easily spend hours.

4. The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization

Less chaotic and more curated, this newer museum focuses on the full span of Egypt’s history from prehistoric times to the present.
Its standout feature is the Royal Mummies Hall, which allows visitors to view the mummified remains of some of Egypt’s most legendary rulers in a dimly lit, reverent setting. Each museum has its own strengths, and you really can’t go wrong with any of them.

5. Khan El-Khalili Bazaar
A visit to Cairo isn’t complete without navigating the labyrinthine alleys of Khan El-Khalili. You’ll find everything from spices to lanterns, perfumes, jewelry, and kitschy souvenirs here.
I’ve visited souks across the Middle East before, but Cairo’s felt different, a bit more chaotic, more theatrical. We bartered for a few fun souvenirs and enjoyed the energy. Pro tip: go with a buddy.
6. Sakkara and the Step Pyramid of Djoser
Less visited than Giza but no less important, Sakkara is home to the Step Pyramid of Djoser, the earliest colossal stone building in Egypt and the prototype for later pyramids. As one of the first ancient sites we visited during our trip, it left a strong impression, haunting, quiet, and atmospheric in a different way than Giza.
7. St. Simon the Tanner Monastery

Located in a district often referred to as “Garbage City” (or, as our guide diplomatically called it, “Recycling City”), St. Simon’s Monastery is carved into a cliffside and serves the city’s Coptic Christian community.
You will find two different auditoriums carved out of stone here, as well as various scenes carved or painted into the walls. The area has a different feel from the rest of Cairo and shows the city’s contrasts.
8. A Nile Dinner Cruise with Cultural Show

Few experiences rival cruising the Nile at night. Most dinner cruises include a buffet meal, belly dancing performances, and live traditional music. It’s a great way to unwind after a full day of sightseeing and to see Cairo from a different perspective.
As the skyline lights flicker across the water, you’ll understand why the Nile remains Egypt’s lifeblood.

9. Visit a Mosque
If you’re able, visiting a mosque in Cairo can be a deeply moving and/or educational experience. We had the opportunity to enter one, and it became one of the most memorable parts of the trip. The architecture, the sense of serenity, and the cultural insight it offered were unmatched.
Cairo can be overwhelming — a nonstop city of 22+ million people where life spills into every alley, bus window, and city block. But within the noise and motion is a deep, pulsating beauty.
I saw all facets of humanity here: children playing in narrow streets, vendors balancing trays, and families going about their daily lives.
My advice? Let go of any expectation of comfort or control, and instead, stay curious and open-hearted. Cairo will stretch you and maybe even change you.
