I can understand why overwater villas are so popular. It feels like you’re living in a postcard.

You wake up in an overwater bungalow in Bora Bora or the Maldives, with the ocean as your front yard. You can dive in coral reefs straight from your private deck, lounge in a private infinity pool with an ocean view, and have a personal butler service to deliver you a cocktail.

This summer, I spent three weeks on the private terrace above the sea, and I’ll admit, it was a step up from my previous holidays. Also, I relaxed like never before.

To be honest, I’m not sure I could spend summer any other way anymore. There is no going back after waking up to the sound of the sea and entering the water directly from your private deck.

I like that right balance of calm isolation and luxury. So, where are some of the best overwater bungalows located?

Find out in this travel guide on overwater villas.

Maldives: A Paradise of Overwater Villas

When it comes to overwater villas, I would compare the Maldives to that one friend who always arrives in the best outfit.

Its islets and atolls, with their white sand beaches and turquoise waters, are always on point.

If you want that wow experience, I recommend staying one or more of the luxury Sun Siyam Resorts. This Maldivian luxury resort brand has five beautiful island resorts in the Maldives. Each one offers stunning overwater villas with the sea just outside your door.

You’ll wake up in your water villa to soothing waves lapping at your feet. The rest is up to you, from a day of snorkeling or kayaking to relaxing in a hammock beneath the sun. Or perhaps find sunken ships?

Each Sun Siyam Resort is unique but offers luxury offerings like private pools, private decks, wellness spas, and excellent cuisine at their many different restaurants.

  • For families who want to stay in an overwater villa, Sun Siyam World and Sun Siyam Olhuveli are both great options.
  • If you’re looking for a romantic couples getaway, then Sun Siyam Iru Fushi is for you. Their 5-star luxury overwater villas are like a postcard.

Bora Bora: Overwater Bungalows with Mount Otemanu Views

Bora Bora is like the Maldives’ tropical cousin but with stunning volcanic Mount Otemanu and a laid-back vibe.

This beautiful jewel of French Polynesia will make you drop your worries into the crystal-clear lagoon. Let’s explore what it has to offer.

Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora

Is it worthwhile?

You tell me: You will wake up in a luxury resort in one of the world’s most beautiful locations. Of course, in an overwater bungalow or beachfront villa with a private terrace, on the private island.

In the evening, you can have a luxurious private dinner at The Motu. If you want something different, schedule a private sunset trip that includes roasting marshmallows on the beach and listening to ancient legends about the first Polynesian explorers.

Or just sip on a piña colada while having fun in the plunge pool.

Therefore, if you believe it is worthwhile, bring your spirit of adventure along with a few additional bucks for that fancy coconut water.

Conrad Bora Bora Nui: King Overwater Pool Villa

Another wonderful alternative I suggest is the Conrad Bora Bora Nui. Especially the King Overwater Pool Villa.

It has everything we look for in a perfect vacation: direct access to turquoise water, huge sliding windows, a private terrace, a private infinity pool, a floating overwater hammock, and an idyllic ocean view.

This property is the definition of luxury, with every detail customized for a relaxing getaway.

InterContinental Bora Bora Le Moana Resort

InterContinental Bora Bora Le Moana Resort is more intimate and relaxed.

This resort is located on the main island of Bora Bora. Its water bungalows and beachfront villas offer amazing views of Mount Otemanu and the lagoon.

Each is created in traditional Polynesian style, with modern conveniences and direct access to the water.

The resort has excellent dining options, including local Polynesian cuisine and seafood. During the dinner, they also host shows showcasing traditional Tahitian dancing.

So I think it’s ideal if you want a calm yet elegant getaway with the extra benefit of Bora Bora’s cultural attractions.

Moorea: Volcanic Island in French Polynesia

Moorea, like the islands of Tahiti and Bora Bora, is one of French Polynesia’s Society Islands.

Moorea is sometimes overshadowed by its well-known “neighbors,” but it’s like that nice friend who doesn’t try too hard yet still manages to steal the show.

Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort & Spa

Nestled along the turquoise expanse of Moorea’s northern shore, the Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort & Spa captures the essence of French Polynesian allure. You can immerse yourself in the island’s tranquil beauty while staying in spacious overwater bungalows, each equipped with private terraces that offer a front-row seat to the vibrant marine life teeming below.

The Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort & Spa also sets itself apart with the island’s only overwater restaurant, complemented by two additional dining venues and bars, delivering a variety of flavors to suit every palate.

Positioned to soak up sunlight from dawn to dusk, the Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort & Spa offers stunning views throughout the day, whether it’s the fiery glow of sunrise or the soft hues of sunset. You can experience Moorea’s natural wonders with complimentary kayaks and paddleboards or stay active on the resort’s tennis courts.

For those seeking a deeper connection to the local culture, immersive Polynesian experiences provide a meaningful glimpse into the island’s traditions.

Manava Moorea Resort

Are you trying to find a beach resort that is both beautiful and reasonably priced? Consider the Manava Moorea Resort on the West Coast. It’s laid-back, has authentic Polynesian decor, and is family-friendly.

Among the 90 rooms available, there are rooms to fit your needs. You can sit on your private terrace and enjoy a piña colada while you watch the sunset. Delightful!

Jamaica: Caribbean Vibes in Overwater Accommodations

Jamaica is the destination for those seeking a Caribbean atmosphere with a touch of elegance.

While you’re there, explore scuba diving at notable locations such as Blue Hole in Ocho Rios, the Wreck of the Kathryn, or Montego Bay Marine Park.

While in Montego Bay, stop by the All-You-Can-Eat Jerk Chicken Buffet for infinite quantities of wonderfully seasoned jerk chicken.

But where to stay?

Sandals South Coast

I would say that Sandals South Coast offers a peaceful atmosphere ideal for relaxation.

It is an all-inclusive resort located on Jamaica’s south coast, stretching over two miles. From your private terrace, you may relax and enjoy the soft lapping of the turquoise water beneath your feet while sipping a rum punch.

It offers overwater bungalows and beachfront suites. Sandals provides a variety of water sports, including scuba diving, and a gourmet dining experience.

It focuses on sustainability and features one of the largest pools in the Caribbean.

Oh, and while you’re there, I recommend you try their famous Red Lane Spa. Your mind and body will be thankful.

Sandals Royal Caribbean (Jamaica):

Sandals Royal Caribbean’s luxe overwater bungalows are a step above.

This adults-only resort in Montego Bay is more centrally located, closer to famous sites.

It is well-known for its private island. It is only accessible by boat, which adds to the sense of exclusivity. The resort blends luxury with a more dynamic environment. So, I would say it’s ideal for couples who love both romance and entertainment.

Whatever activities you choose, do them to the beat of reggae, Jamaican music popularized by legends such as Bob Marley.

Overwater Villas in Belize

Did you know that Belize has the world’s second-largest coral reef system, making it a diver’s paradise?

Belize is a Central American treasure, with unique communities, friendly residents, and ancient Mayan ruins hidden in the jungle.

Coco Plum Cay

I recommend Coco Plum Cay, located in Belize’s turquoise waters.

Built on stilts, these rustic overwater villas have direct access to the Caribbean Sea, private terraces, and breathtaking views just outside your door.

The resort is family-friendly and all-inclusive.

It does have wifi, in case you were wondering. However, I suppose that’s equivalent to asking if they have oxygen or water these days. We all like posting those viral selfies, don’t we?

Overwater Villas in Panama

Did you know Bocas del Toro is a UNESCO World Heritage site?

This means you’ll get to enjoy not only an overwater villa but also one of the world’s most biodiverse places. How wonderful is that?

Sea Monkey Bocas del Toro

If you’re seeking a more affordable getaway, I recommend Sea Monkey Bocas del Toro.

Depending on the time of year and the kind of villa you select, rates might range from $120 per night.

The rustic elegance of each villa’s design blends in perfectly with the tropical setting. I would say it makes you feel more connected to nature.

You can snorkel with vibrant fish, have a candlelit meal over the ocean, or take a kayak journey from your villa to discover uninhabited islands and secret coves.

Water Villas in Mexico

Did you know chocolate was “born” in Mexico? Just like chilies, tacos, and corn.

Also, Mexico is home to the world’s largest pyramid by volume, the Great Pyramid of Cholula.

Palafitos Overwater Bungalows

So, if you want to experience Mexico’s vibrant colors, rich flavors, and welcoming culture, I recommend Palafitos Overwater Bungalows.

It is located on the picturesque Maroma Beach. It features luxury overwater villas that float above the crystal-clear Caribbean Sea.

I know you will appreciate even more the private infinity pools and direct access to the water.

Also, here’s a fun fact: these eco-friendly villas were built using sustainable local materials. Cool, right?

Overwater Villas in the USA

Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort

While the idea of overwater villas might evoke visions of tropical paradises such as Bora Bora, the United States has its own version. It’s known as Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort.

It is located on the banks of the Seven Seas Lagoon and was inspired by the South Pacific.

And, while you may not be in a tropical area, you can still feel like you’re on a getaway abroad—with the extra bonus of Mickey Mouse.

But what do you do there? Enjoy cabanas, sundecks and the themed pool, take part in the ‘Ohana breakfast with characters, get a tropical drink from the Dole Whip kiosk, and watch the “Happily Ever After” fireworks light up Cinderella Castle.

Also, keep in mind that swimming is forbidden. Mostly because of alligators, so you don’t want to take a chance when no one is watching.

Water Villas in Cambodia

Cambodia’s coastal waters have some of Southeast Asia’s purest and most pristine coral reefs. So, it’s a must-have for snorkeling and scuba diving fans.

Are you ready to feel like a character in a tropical adventure movie?

Song Saa Private Island

If so, I recommend the Song Saa Private Island Hotel. The eco-luxe resort is located on private islands in the Koh Rong Archipelago.

Don’t be surprised if you spot some friendly marine life—for instance, sea turtles or colorful fish.

And don’t just sunbathe on the private deck. You can paddleboard, eat at world-class restaurants, drink coconut cocktails, kayak through mangroves, or visit deserted islands on a private boat.

Don’t worry; it’s not as deserted as it sounds—there’s always somewhere to grab a bite.

Is this the cherry on top? Welcome to Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay.

This luxurious place is located along a beautiful lagoon, but you’ll never be bored. You’re booking an adventure when you reserve a stay at the Fiji Marriott.

The overwater bungalows are like something out of a tropical dream, complete with private decks, hammocks, and plunge pools.

Consider kayaking or snorkeling among vibrant coral reefs when you’re tired of doing nothing.

Want to learn more about local culture? Attend a welcoming ceremony or take a cooking class to learn how to prepare traditional Fijian cuisine.

And don’t forget about Fiji Time—it’s a thing here, and it’s the perfect excuse to slow down, sip on coconut water, and pretend you have nowhere else to be.

Overwater villas are the ideal adult playground: hammocks dangling over turquoise waters, allowing you to relax while watching colorful fish swim below.

When you want to be active, there is direct access to blue waters for snorkeling, swimming, or kayaking outside your door, all in perfect privacy.

The Practicalities of Booking an Overwater Bungalow

Is It Worth the Splurge?

Peace is priceless, yet when it comes to vacation getaways, the price is quite fixed.

But after spending a few weeks in such a location, I can honestly state that I’ve never relaxed like that on any trip before.

It’s good to have a stress-free getaway without having to visit every site in the Internet’s travel guides. Simply soak up the sun, relax on the private terrace, swim, and enjoy the ocean view.

So, is it worth the splurge?

Absolutely!

Weighing Cost vs. Experience: Private Infinity Pools, Marine Life Encounters, and Panoramic Views

The cost of booking an overwater bungalow may raise an eyebrow. So, let me break it down for you.

You’re not just paying for a bed; you’re investing in panoramic views, private infinity pools, and the opportunity to wake up to the ocean beneath your feet.

You’ll have direct access to the turquoise waters, where you may swim and discover marine life. See how I gave you a good excuse?

Final Tips on Booking Your Dream Overwater Villa Stay

Ready to book your fantasy water villa? Here are a few last pointers.

First, evaluate your location—do you want to be close to vibrant coral reefs for snorkeling, or do you prefer complete seclusion?

Make sure to investigate the area and the resort’s offerings, such as private excursions, dining options, water sports, and spa treatments, to match your style.

Consider the travel requirements. Some overwater villas can only be reached by seaplane, which requires an additional ticket from the international airport.

Next, consider the season—high season implies more crowds and greater rates, whereas off-peak may offer a quieter, more economical experience.

The size and style are also important: some overwater bungalows are built for couples, with a snug layout and fewer square feet, while others are more family-friendly.

Many overwater villas are part of an all-inclusive package, with meals and activities. Others offer full or half-board options. Don’t forget to inquire about inclusions.

Finally, reserve an overwater villa and let the vistas and ultimate relaxation take care of the rest.
