Sometimes the most beautiful places are far from the beaten path. That’s especially the case in New Zealand, which is home to far-flung fjords and remote mountain peaks, many inaccessible by road.
“Retreats without Roads” is a hand-crafted itinerary that takes travelers to the best of remote New Zealand, often by boat, four-wheel drive or helicopter.
Travel in New Zealand
This 14-day tour offered by New Zealand In Depth starts on Kapiti Island, located on New Zealand’s North Island, where guests spend the day exploring the island with a local Maori family.
Then it’s off by helicopter to beautiful Marlbourgh Sound for a walk on the Queen Charlotte Track or to visit Moturua Island, famous for its bird life. After flying by helicopter to the Bay of Many Coves on the South Island, travelers can relax with a spa treatment or go kayaking in the Sounds.
Later, guests head down the east coast to Kaikoura to go whale watching or swimming with seals or dolphins. Guests arrive by helicopter at Seascape Annandale on Banks Peninsula to a James Bond-like setting with accommodations that appear to be floating over the open sea.
From there, the tour continues south to Mt. Aspiring National Park for a unique stay on a working sheep farm, a location in the snow-capped highlands which is only accessible by helicopter.
“Retreats without Roads” continues in breathtaking Fiordland, considered the most remote area of New Zealand. Guests fly by helicopter to iconic Milford Sound, and then it’s on to Doubtful Sound for an overnight cruise in Fiordland National Park.
The “Retreats without Roads” program is offered from November through April. Program experiences vary from bird watching and hiking to spa treatments, farming, fishing, whale watching, mountain biking and swimming with seals and dolphins. World-class cuisine and premier accommodations are part of the experience.
