10 Reasons to Visit Vis, Croatia: A Peaceful Paradise Like No Other

Vis is a peaceful paradise unlike any other Croatian island. Because it was closed to visitors for decades, it has maintained its tranquility and natural beauty.

But I will tell you more about it later. For now, just remember that Vis is considered by many to be the most beautiful Croatian island.

Harper’s Bazaar would surely agree with me, as it named Vis one of the three most romantic destinations in the world. Vis also amazed Hollywood; it was the backdrop for the famous musical Mamma Mia.

But I think Vis is much more than just a beauty (of which there is plenty).

The Island of Vis has its own unique way of life. It can be summarized in a single word: pomalo. It means to take it easy. But in the Dalmatian style, which is far more “easy” than regular easy.

Anyway, this Croatian island is located in Dalmatia (the Dalmatian coast), near popular locations like Dubrovnik, Brač, Zadar and Split.

And in case you didn’t know, my country, Croatia, is in Europe. It shares borders with Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia, Hungary and Italy. The capital city is Zagreb.

Recommendation: Rent a Scooter

Similar to Korčula, I suggest renting a scooter or car to explore Vis. I’m sure you won’t regret it. Vis is even smaller than Korčula. This means that you can easily see everything.

In other words, you can enjoy a coffee at Komiža, take a selfie above Stiniva Bay, and still have time for dinner in Vis Town.

And, trust me, such variety will definitely bring your vacation to the next level. Here are 10 great reasons to visit Vis.

Tranquility Like No Other Croatian Island

Vis is unlike any other Croatian island in its simplicity and calm. And this is not without reason. Namely, Vis has a long history, with influences from Greeks, Romans, Venetians, Austrians and Italians.

As part of Yugoslavia, the island of Vis was a military base. This most distant Croatian-inhabited island was a favorite hideout of the Yugoslav president Tito. So, it was completely closed to tourists.

Also, certain regions of Vis were considered off-limits, with only military troops and select government officials permitted entry. Until when? Until Croatia’s independence in 1990.

However, this isolation allowed the island’s natural beauty to thrive, retaining its authentic Mediterranean charm.

So, there are fewer hotels and tourist facilities than along the rest of the Adriatic coast. And that’s why I consider Vis an excellent destination if you want to truly relax.

Long story short, Vis did not gain popularity, such as, for example, Hvar. But according to many, it is still Croatia’s most beautiful island.

Visit Blue Cave & Green Cave

Do you know that Salma Hayek and Ryan Reynolds emerge from the Blue Cave in the film The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard? Witnesses also say that Greta Garbo was so amazed by the Blue Cave that she repeated only three words: Oh, my God!

I would say that this is not surprising. Blue Cave is one of the most beautiful places on the Adriatic coast. It is found on Biševo Island, a little islet off the coast of Vis.

Do you know what makes the Blue Cave so enchanting?

Well, sunlight passes through the underwater opening and reflects off the seafloor, creating an incredible blue light that illuminates the cave’s interior. Long story short, it’s magical.

Although the Blue Cave is far more popular, don’t overlook the beautiful Green Cave. The easiest way is to book a boat tour that includes a day trip to both places.

Of course, the Blue Cave is very popular among tourists, and the entrance fee is approximately 15 euros. However, if you’re asking if it’s worth it, the answer is yes.

Komiža Old Town

I would say that Komiža is one of those Instagram-worthy locations, but in a Dalmatian kind of way.

This is the second-largest city on the island of Vis. It has a vibrant waterfront, charming cafes, plus colorful houses and boats.

I recommend it for one of those “pomalo” afternoons when you just want to take a leisurely walk along the Adriatic Sea, eat ice cream, drink coffee, and enjoy some fresh seafood.

Explore Vis Tours and Excursions

Conquer the Unconquerable Peak of Vis

If you are not a “pomalo” person, I recommend hiking to the highest point of Vis. It is called Hum and it is located 587 meters above sea level.

This is one of Croatia’s least-visited peaks. And it is actually unachievable. Why? Because there is a military facility that civilians aren’t allowed to access.

Therefore, you will have to stop at the very nearby Church of the Holy Spirit.

I would say that the trail is moderately difficult. Also, keep in mind that summers in Croatia are very hot so make sure you have enough water.

But the view is incredible: Komiža, Biševo Island and the blue Adriatic Sea sparkling in the distance.

Visit Vis Town

Vis Town is the largest city on the island of Vis. Just as you would in any other Mediterranean city, wander through its narrow cobblestone streets and enjoy cute cafes.

The town’s rich past includes Austrian, Italian and even British influences—for example, a 16th-century Venetian fortress with nice views of the Adriatic Sea.

If you’re more interested in cuisine influences, I understand. Look for Italian influences in seafood meals and pasta.

Stiniva Beach (Stiniva Bay)

And now it’s time to introduce the Vis queen. It appears on almost every ranking of the most beautiful Croatian beaches. Ladies and gentlemen; Stiniva Beach.

Stiniva is a beautiful cove on the island of Vis. It is known for its dramatic cliffs and crystal-clear waters.

You can enjoy swimming and snorkeling among the vibrant marine life or soaking in the beautiful views framed by towering cliffs. What beautiful pictures those will be, huh?

However, Stiniva is not easily accessible. You can only get there by boat or hiking trail. I recommend a 20-minute boat ride, but that’s just me.

Whatever you choose, don’t miss Stiniva. It is truly iconic.

Military Base Tunnels & Submarine Tunnel

As I already said, the island of Vis was not always a romantic destination. It used to be a military base. So, I recommend visiting the underground tunnels, the submarine tunnel and Tito’s Cave.

These sights, built during World War II, are only accessible via guided tours.

Because these objects are neglected, you will get safety equipment. The interesting tour lasts approximately three and a half hours and includes fascinating information about the tunnels’ role in maritime defense.

Aside from that, the places provide stunning views of the Adriatic area. I assume this is probably not the type of activity you had planned for your summer vacation. But it is unique to Vis, so I really believe it is worth a visit.

Of course, if you only came for romance, feel free to skip this and focus on what Vis is most known for: vibrant colors, stone houses, untouched nature and a crystal-clear Adriatic Sea.

Beautiful Beaches: Stiniva & Milna

Stiniva is the queen of Vis’s beaches, but it is more difficult to reach. So, you will not go there every day.

That’s why I recommend Milna as one of the best beaches in the area. This beautiful beach is known for its tranquil atmosphere and wonderful cove. The beach is ideal for snorkeling due to its abundance of marine life.

Also, consider Stončica Beach. It’s a pebbly beach with crystal-clear Adriatic waters and lush greenery.  

It’s ideal for families, with shallow waters perfect for kids. It has a beach bar that serves refreshing drinks that will help you cool off during hot Croatian summer days.

And if you’re seeking a sandy beach, I recommend Zaglav Beach near Milna Bay.

Wine Tasting Tours: Plavac Mali & Vugava

Enjoying the Mediterranean vistas is nice but enjoying them with a glass of wine is even better.

I recommend Plavac Mali. It is a robust red wine from the Dalmatian coast. Also, don’t miss the opportunity to try Vugava. It is a white wine with fruity flavors.

Also, don’t miss a visit to family-owned wineries. There, you can taste wines combined with local cheeses, cured meats and olive oil.

You’ll probably figure this out by yourself, but here it is: all of this is especially nice when it is on a sunny terrace facing the Adriatic Sea.

Dance into Mamma Mia

Ten years and 600 million dollars after the first film, it was time for Mamma Mia 2. But do you know where Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again was filmed? 

Many people do not know that Mamma Mia 2 was filmed in Vis, Croatia.

“It’s the most beautiful place I’ve ever been,” said actress Alexi Devis.

You can visit film locations for Mamma Mia 2 on the Croatian island of Vis.  

“Filming in Croatia was incredible. A lot of the happiness seen in the movie comes from the happiness felt while we were filming on the island. In the movie, Croatia “pretends” to be Greece, even though Croatia should be Croatia, and we hope that a lot of people will come here,” said director Ol Parker.

And I couldn’t agree more.
