I placed my hand on her rough, leathery trunk, tracing the deep grooves with my fingers as she regarded me with curious eyes. Here we are, two beings of drastically different proportions, feeling a connection in the simplest, truest sense.
As I walked alongside the elephants, I felt such a deep-rooted reverence for their slow grace, their intentional footing and the acrobatic precision of their trunks. They explored the world with intention, rooting for figs, honoring their lifelong mahouts and carrying themselves with effortless majesty.
A Stay at Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp and Resort

The Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp and Resort sits at the intersection of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar, overlooking the Mekong River and surrounded by lush jungle. Upon arrival, the staff greeted me with warmth and a drum ceremony. It immediately set the tone for a stay that goes beyond the ordinary.
The resort offers a variety of accommodations designed to immerse guests in the jungle.
Deluxe Three-Country View Room: These rooms feature a private balcony with sweeping views of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar, a cloudlike bed, and a terrazzo soaking tub. When I wasn’t walking among elephants or swimming in the pool, I spent my time resting on the balcony, taking in the lush jungle and savoring a bowl of tropical fruits.
Mekong Explorer Suites: For those seeking something even more luxurious, these tents blend Lanna tradition with colonial elegance. Several options of different sizes are available, including some with outdoor pools or baths. Each one is crafted with meticulous attention to detail, making you feel like a jungle explorer while remaining completely comfortable.
Jungle Bubbles: For a once-in-a-lifetime encounter with the wild, these transparent domes place you directly among the elephants. Guests can sleep under a sky full of stars, wake to the sounds of the jungle and watch the gentle giants roam just below their private deck.
Every detail, from in-room dining to air-conditioned comfort, is designed to let you commune with nature without leaving luxury behind. There’s nothing else like it in the world.

Culinary Experiences at Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp and Resort
Canopy Lunch

The Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp and Resort excels at unforgettable experiences and the Canopy lunch is a standout. Here, a dining platform slowly rises 52 meters above the grasslands, revealing sweeping views of the Golden Triangle and the Mekong River tracing the borders of Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar. Below, elephants wander peacefully, plucking branches as if they were frail twigs.
Dozens of warm, fresh dishes are presented in woven baskets, offering sweet, salty and spicy flavors of the region. An Indiana Jones-style map and binoculars encouraged exploration and I spent nearly two hours suspended above, mesmerized, snapping photos and watching the elephants roam.
The Canopy experience accommodates up to four guests per session and is suitable for anyone over 10 years old.
Samsarn, a Fine Dining Restaurant

I dined in the resort’s fine-dining gem, Samsarn, where Northern Thai, Lao and Burmese flavors converge in stunning presentations. Following the waitress’s recommendations, I savored dishes like Chiang Rai black rice, seared king scallops with lemongrass salsa, wagyu pho with bone marrow and chilli brioche and buffalo cheek khao soi with coconut foam. Each plate was a perfect balance of elegance and authenticity, reflecting the culinary richness of the Golden Triangle.
Sala Mae Nam, Northern Thai Cuisine With a View
For breakfast and lunch, I visited Sala Mae Nam for a magnificent buffet of tropical fruits, international favorites and live cooking stations. The terrace overlooks the valley below, and the menu features fresh, organic ingredients sourced from the Royal Project, a local initiative supporting sustainable farming and hill tribe communities.
Other Options

Guests can enjoy the Elephant Bar and Opium Terrace, where open-air seating overlooking the infinity pool sets the scene for an ideal happy hour.
For a truly memorable evening, designer dining allows for romantic meals in rice paddies, sunset salas or by the Ruak River, complete with butler service and even visits from the elephants themselves.
For those who want a hands-on experience, Spice Spoons cooking classes guide you through local markets and teach Northern Thai specialties, from curries to traditional desserts.
And for ultimate comfort, the resort’s in-room dining menu is available around the clock, perfect for a private breakfast on your balcony or a midnight indulgence.
Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp and Resort’s Experiences and Offerings

Elephant Camp
At the heart of Anantara Golden Triangle is its award-winning elephant camp and for good reason. Here are a few of the ways guests can connect with these gentle giants during their stay.
Walking With Giants
My morning walk with the elephants was the highlight of my visit. Guided by their lifelong mahouts, I followed the gentle giants through the jungle, watching them snack on leaves, enjoy figs and playfully interact with one another. Feeding, touching and walking alongside them is a profound, humbling and unforgettable experience.
Other Elephant Experiences
Guests can also learn about mahout traditions, observe the behavior of rescued elephants and participate in hands-on activities such as preparing medicinal treats for older elephants. Sponsorships are available to support their care and conservation.
Adventure from Above
One of the resort’s newest offerings is the Sky Bike Adventure, which lets guests glide high above the jungle canopy, spotting elephants and other wildlife below. You can pedal at your own pace or be pulled along, taking in breathtaking views from the treetops.
Cultural Add-ons
Optional excursions include a visit to the Hall of Opium Museum and nearby temples or villages, providing context on the Golden Triangle region.
Wellness and Leisure

Spa and Fitness: The open-air spa pavilion overlooks the jungle and focuses on traditional northern Thai treatments. Yoga, massages and herbal therapies leave you refreshed and grounded.
Pool and Recreation: Relax at the infinity pool or explore other leisure activities on-site. Fitness videos are available in the wellness area, which also features a sauna, steam room and whirlpool.
Sustainability and Elephant Ethics

Anantara Golden Triangle is both a sacred home for elephants and a model for responsible travel. The award-winning elephant camp rescues animals from logging camps, street performances and other unsafe conditions, providing lifelong care under the guidance of experienced mahouts.
Guests can connect with the elephants through hands-on experiences like Walking with Giants, learning about mahout traditions and feeding rescued elephants. They can also sponsor an elephant, directly supporting its food, medical care and daily needs.
Sustainability is woven into every aspect of the resort. Single-use plastics have been replaced, solar panels supply part of the electricity needs and locally sourced, organic ingredients are used in dining. Waste is carefully managed and recycled and the jungle and rivers are regularly cleaned to protect the surrounding environment.
Through these efforts, every visit supports ethical elephant care and conservation while giving guests a meaningful connection to the natural and cultural landscape of the Golden Triangle.
