Ålesund is a picturesque town on Norway’s northwestern coast, renowned for its unique architecture and stunning natural surroundings. It is a perfect destination during a road trip through the Norwegian landscapes.
As my girlfriend and I are both from Norway, we have found road trips to be the absolute best way to explore the country. Ålesund is one of our favorite places to spend a few days after lots of driving.
The city offers a perfect blend of cultural and natural attractions, making it an ideal destination for a short getaway. Here is a guide to make sure you get the most out of your visit.
About Ålesund, Norway
Surrounded by outlying islands and the ocean, Ålesund is located in Møre og Romsdal county. The region is known for its dramatic mountains, deep valleys and beautiful fjords.
Ålesund is a seven-hour drive from Oslo that takes you through the very best of what Norway has to offer. This small city is packed with character. The Art Nouveau-style buildings have profoundly shaped Ålesund’s architectural landscape with the style that emerged in the 1890s, focusing on creating art inspired by natural forms.
So, where should you start?
Day 1: Explore the City
Morning: Explore the streets
Begin your adventure in Ålesund by immersing yourself in its architectural beauty. As you arrive, take a leisurely walk through the streets to admire the stunning buildings. It is the best way to gain your first impressions of the city.
The intricate details, flowing lines and organic forms of these structures will captivate you at every turn. Key landmarks to explore include the Jugendstilsenteret (Art Nouveau Centre) and the Ålesund Church, both exemplifying the style’s influence on the town’s identity.
Best Tips & Tools to Plan Your Trip
Mid-day: Discover Marine Life at Atlanterhavsparken
After soaking in the city’s architectural beauty, take a short drive to Atlanterhavsparken, one of Northern Europe’s largest saltwater aquariums. The aquarium offers an in-depth look at the local marine life of the North Sea and surrounding areas.
Observe a variety of sea creatures (including fish, crabs and octopuses) in their natural habitats. A little tip: Stay for the interactive exhibits and daily feeding shows, as they provide an educational and entertaining experience for visitors of all ages. A favorite is the feeding of seals which is great fun to witness.
Afternoon: Relax by the Canal
Head back to the charming Brosundet canal for a leisurely afternoon. This picturesque spot is perfect for taking a break and taking in the city atmosphere. Find a cozy café or restaurant along the canal to enjoy a meal or a cup of coffee while watching boats gently glide by.
If you’re feeling adventurous, consider renting a paddleboard or a kayak to explore the waters up close. The tranquil canal offers a unique perspective of the city’s beautiful buildings reflected in the water.
Late Afternoon: Panoramic Views from Fjellstua
Next, embark on a walk up to Fjellstua, the viewpoint atop Mount Aksla. The journey involves climbing 418 steps, but the effort is well worth it. This spot might be one of your favorite places during your visit.
As you ascend, the panoramic views of Ålesund, its surrounding islands and the vast ocean unfold before you. Once at the top, take some time to relax and enjoy the breathtaking scenery.
The viewpoint provides an excellent opportunity to take photos and offers a comprehensive overview of the city’s unique layout and natural beauty.
Day 2: Experience the Nature Surrounding Ålesund
Morning: Boat Excursion to Wildlife Havens
Start your second day with a boat excursion to explore the rich wildlife around Ålesund. Witness an array of seabirds and marine mammals as you go towards the open ocean. If you are lucky, during the summer months you might spot puffins.
Several tours are available. These tours often provide informative commentary about the local ecosystem and the species that inhabit it, giving you an enlightening experience along the trip.
Afternoon: Hiking Sukkertoppen
After your boat adventure, it’s time to lace up your hiking boots and head to Sukkertoppen, it is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful hiking spots near Ålesund.
Sukkertoppen, which translates to “The Sugar Loaf,” is a relatively short and popular hike offering spectacular views. The trail is well-marked and suitable for hikers of all skill levels.
The city, surrounding islands and coastline become increasingly stunning as you make your way up. I recommend bringing some food and a blanket so you can relax at the summit and soak in the scenery for hours.
Once you reach the summit of Sukkertoppen, find a comfortable spot to spread out your blanket and enjoy a picnic. The unobstructed views from the top provide a perfect backdrop for a relaxing afternoon meal.
Time to head home…or your next destination?
After two days of exploring Ålesund, you will have experienced the best of what this enchanting city has to offer.
Whether strolling through the charming streets, kayaking along the canal, hiking up mountains, or observing wildlife – Ålesund will give you memories for life with its rich and varied activities.
Where to Stay in Ålesund
Ålesund is a small city. Therefore most hotels and apartments around the city center are within short walking distance to everything you need.
Hotel Noreg is a great option with its central location and nice rooms making it a great place to rest between your excursions.
Where to Eat in Ålesund
Eating out is popular in Ålesund, so if you have a particular restaurant in mind, I highly recommend booking in advance.
Anno is a great place that offers a variety of dishes. Spanning from Nordic cuisine to delicious Neapolitan-style pizza.
You can make reservations through most restaurant’s websites or by calling.

The best way to arrive in Ålesund is by car, as the surrounding areas are stunning. I strongly recommend making Ålesund a road trip destination starting from Oslo.
