If you ever travel around Europe, you will doubtlessly hear travelers overwhelmingly talk about one particular accommodation as the most notorious party hostel on the continent: Wild Elephants.

Hostels in general are known for their vibrant youth culture, social atmosphere, and low-budget amenities. But Wild Elephants goes above and beyond when it comes to fun—and it’s an unforgettable experience, though definitely not for the faint of heart.

I’ve stayed there twice, once in 2022 and once this year, and each time I’ve walked away thinking, “Wow, this is the craziest place I’ve ever been.” Most people who’ve stayed there would likely agree. So, what makes Wild Elephants the most notorious party hostel in Europe?

Wild Elephants, The Hostel itself

Wild Elephants is located in the center of Bratislava, Slovakia, a country that neighbors the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, and Ukraine. “Wild,” as the staff and guests call it, is within a 10-minute walk of anywhere in the Old City. It’s a relatively new location – the previous landlords eventually got fed up with the nonstop partying, and the hostel had to relocate.

That said, the current space is surprisingly nice: multiple multi-story buildings with modern design, spacious corridors, and wide stairwells. With so many dorms, some rooms even sleep up to 14 people. A bed can go for just €10 ($12.50) in high season, or as little as €7 ($8.75) in the off-season. There are also several kitchens and common rooms, plus a well-stocked clothing exchange.

The hostel’s eclectic murals and frescoes were painted by volunteers and are scattered throughout the property. Combined with a collection of quirky knick-knacks from around the world—plus a lot of elephant-themed décor—it gives the place a chaotic but charming vibe.

But let’s address Wild Elephants’…elephant in the room: just off one of the kitchens is a designated sex room, complete with a two-headed shower, mood lighting, and signs actively encouraging guests to make use of it. The room is rarely empty, and the walls are thin. In fact, whether in the dorms or elsewhere, someone is always hooking up—and the whole hostel can hear it. There’s never a moment of silence at Wild Elephants.

Wild Elephants is run by a team of volunteers—nearly all of whom originally came as guests and decided to stay on. Few are over 30, and they’re encouraged to express themselves freely. Every night, they cook a vegan dinner for the guests (available for €5) and lead all the hostel’s activities. It’s like having personal tour guides, without paying the usual premium.

Many volunteers are serious partiers themselves. They’ll greet you with a glazed, friendly “wassup” and a shared beer (or three). Some even keep a running “nationality sex tally,” tracking the countries of origin of their various hookups. In this way, the volunteers are deeply embedded in the hostel’s unique (and wild) culture, unlike anything I’ve seen elsewhere.

I never figured out who actually owns the place—or how much they know about what goes on—but I’d love to see the look on their face if they ever found out.

Lake and River Parties on the Danube River

The most iconic experience at Wild Elephants is their biweekly lake and river parties. After a hearty pregame at the hostel, the volunteers lead a group to either Zlate Piesky (a nearby lake) or a secluded stretch of the Danube River. There, they build a bonfire, distribute one-liter jugs of “jungle juice” (often one per guest), and let the night unfold.

These jugs are legendary. The exact recipe remains a secret, but they contain a potent mix of alcohols—and possibly even ketamine, though no one’s been able to confirm it. What is certain: they lead to blackout-level intoxication and brutal hangovers.

These lakeside and riverside ragers can last all night and often include beach games, skinny-dipping, dancing, barbecues, and late-night bonding with fellow guests under the moonlight. They must be experienced to be believed.

Daytime Recreation in Bratislava

For the less adventurous (myself included), the hostel offers plenty of daytime activities—something different every day. These might include group board games or card games, hikes, daytime trips to the lake, or walks up to Bratislava Castle.

To help guests engage with Slovak culture, the hostel also leads daily visits to local restaurants, where you can try Slovak beers and dishes like halušky, a dish made with sheep cheese noodles and speck (think bacon bits).

And no matter the time of day, you’ll always find a friend in the common rooms. Whatever you want to explore—my favorite is checking out the nearby Cold War bunkers—you’re sure to find someone eager to join.

For a broader introduction to the city, the Guided City and Castle Tour includes Bratislava Castle and Old Town — a relaxing way to learn about local history and architecture while taking in sweeping views from the castle hill.

Bratislava: Party City

Wild Elephants is just one part of a greater party ecosystem in Bratislava. If you’ve had enough of the lake and river madness, the city is packed with bars and clubs to explore. Just be wary of street solicitors inviting you to strip clubs with “special deals”—these are usually scams.

That said, between Bratislava’s vibrant nightlife and the pure, unfiltered chaos of Wild Elephants, you’ll have no trouble finding ways to enjoy yourself. I hope you visit one day—and experience Europe’s most infamous party hostel for yourself.

Thinking about seeing what all the hype’s about? You can find Wild Elephants — and thousands of other hostels across Europe on Hostelworld.
