Cape Town, nestled at the southern tip of Africa, is a place where the iconic Table Mountain meets the blue Atlantic Ocean.

The city has coastal suburbs, bustling urban streets, cultural hotspots, historical monuments, and quiet vineyards all within reach, so it’s not surprising how often it ranks among the world’s most beautiful cities.

But I realized what makes Cape Town special isn’t just its famous attractions but the unusual, offbeat experiences you don’t see in guidebooks. This isn’t your customary Cape Town checklist.

It’s for travellers who want to explore the hidden gems and see a side that is personal, immersive, and undeniably Cape Town. These are the kinds of adventures that stay with you, not just because they are super cool, but because they connect you to the heart of the city in ways you wouldn’t expect.

Travel Guide to South Africa

Off-Road Adventures in a Jeep

Make it a sightseeing tour, but not in the generally crowded bus or large noisy groups; instead, choose an open-top Jeep Wrangler where there’s wind in your hair and a passionate local guide at the wheel.

Jeep Tours Cape Town, founded and run by Lizanne, an inspiring female entrepreneur, and her team of local guides, takes pride in offering authentic, off-the-beaten-path experiences designed for the curious traveller.

I remember driving through the vineyards and open countryside, taking in views I would never have seen on my own. Our guide shared little anecdotes, pointed out spots that only locals would know, and made sure it wasn’t a rushed tour like the typical ones.

No strict schedule, no cheesy commentary, just honest, meaningful stops and good conversations. We had an amazing time exploring two beautiful vineyards, sipping wine with a view from the top of the hill, and touring the city like very few people do.

The best part? The tours are fully tailored to your interests and your vibe. You can go on a wine safari, explore mountain trails, or visit coastal villages. It is tours like this that make you feel like you are actually exploring the soul of a place and not just a tourist passing through.

Firing a Real Cannon

How many people can say they have fired a real cannon? Very few! This is easily one of the most bizarre and unexpected things I’ve ever done on a trip – and certainly one of the most memorable!

At Nitida Cannon Station, we took part in an interactive historical experience where you literally fire a working cannon.

The process is carefully guided by trained professionals who walk you through every detail: the use of the cannons, where they are from, how the mechanics worked, the process of packing the powder, lighting the fuse, and why these mighty machines still captivate us.

One person rings the big brass bell, while I had the honor of packing and preparing the cannon under expert guidance. I stood there ready to light the cannon, the anticipation built, my hand lowered, and then… BOOM.

I didn’t expect it to launch so fast or feel it right in my chest. But when the smoke cleared, there was a grin on everyone’s face — like, “Did we really just do that?” I even got a certificate. It’s a small touch, but it makes the moment feel official.

You can also try your hand at sabrage, opening a bottle of sparkling wine with a saber. And of course, taste the delicious Nitida local wines. Many newlywed couples choose this spot as a way to celebrate the start of their new bond with a bang – quite literally.

Wine Tasting in Cozy Caves

One of the coolest things about Klein Roosboom is the way they have transformed longstanding concrete wine tanks into private tasting caves where you can even see the old wine stains.

Each cave has its own theme and character, with quirky names, comfy seating, and personal touches that make the whole thing feel natural and intimate. Sit back in an artistic cave with your friends and family, sip delicious wine, and enjoy great conversations on the vintage furniture.

This family-run estate has every wine named after a family member, and the label often includes a personal story or letter dedicated to them – it made us appreciate the wine even more.

They have a great collection of earthy, fruity red and white wines and even a Rosé. Pair these wines with their locally-sourced cheese and charcuterie platters consisting of an array of farm bread, seasonal fruits, rootstock crisps, beef biltong, and chocolate brownies.

Outside, the garden space is relaxed and inviting. Families, couples, and friends can gather under shaded trees or lounge in beanbags with wine glasses in hand. And there’s Jéan Restaurant for delightful seasonal dishes with good portions and great flavor.

This experience is perfect for romantics, families, or anyone who wants to enjoy their wine with a whole different vibe.

Hands-On with Diamonds at Shimansky

Being surrounded by hundreds of diamonds is a dream come true for many women, which is why The Shimansky Diamond Experience is perfect! It gives you an honest, up-close look at South Africa’s most iconic gem.

The tour takes you through the entire journey of a diamond: how it was first discovered, then mined and sourced, to how it’s cut, polished, and set into beautiful jewelry.

Take a walk around the showroom, see the variety of rings, earrings, and My Girl collection, which is the world’s first square-cut diamond – you can even try it for yourself. We also learned about Tanzanite, one of the rarest gemstones in the world, and so stunning.

The experience is as educational as it is fascinating, and you feel a real appreciation for the skill and patience involved.

The best part is the tour includes a chance to polish a raw diamond under the expert guidance of a professional gemcutter. It’s so satisfying to be a part of this process, especially since we only see the sparkling final product, not the efforts and time that go into making it so magnificent.

And of course, no experience in South Africa is complete without a little indulgence, so enjoy a curated tasting of local gin and chocolate pairing. As a gin lover, this was the perfect way to end the dazzling diamond tour.

Wines, Wildlife and Sustainability in a Vineyard Tour

I visited Vergelegen in Somerset West expecting a simple wine tasting, but came back with a deeper appreciation for nature and sustainability. The Environmental Tour takes you through a beautiful mix of open landscapes, indigenous flowers, ancient trees, and scenic mountain views.

I hadn’t expected a mini safari experience here, but along the way, we spotted bontebok, red hartebeest, black wildebeest, Nguni cattle, and even a few impossible-to-spot Rau quagga, part of a special breeding project that Vergelegen supports to help bring back this extinct species.

We learned about how the estate is focusing on sustainability, from rehabilitating indigenous fynbos to investing in solar power and managing water responsibly.

It’s a rather engaging and interesting tour – hear the buzzing of bees, see rare butterflies, recognize the unexpected bird calls, and gasp at the beautiful rolling landscape of greenery.

After the tour, we went for the wine tasting. The Florence Rosé and Wild Winds Sauvignon were my favorites, and it’s true, wine always tastes better when you understand the ground it came from.

You can also explore the 300-year-old Cape Dutch homestead and take a peek into the estate’s 200-year-old library, which is home to more than 4,500 catalogued books. Heaven for readers.

For people who love slow travel, meaningful experiences, and leaving a city feeling inspired, Vergelegen’s Environmental Tour is worth carving out time for.

The Most Fun You’ll Ever Have in a Kitchen

It is true, good food brings people together. This isn’t your average cooking class. This is for anyone who enjoys new company, a little chaos in the kitchen, fun music, and a different experience. You don’t need to be a chef. Just show up, grab a drink, and chop, stir, freestyle your way through a delicious menu.

I tried their Signature Jam with a group of friends, and we kicked things off with drinks and snacks. After that, we were split into teams, handed a spread of fresh ingredients, and given the choice to follow the steps or mix it up with our own twist.

Don’t worry if you’re not a pro. You’re not here to impress anyone, just to have fun. There are different menu styles you can choose depending on your vibe.

While we only had two dishes to make, overall the menu was vast and consisted of fritters, risotto, chicken skewers, roasted vegetables, and even tacos. There were vegetarian and meat choices, so no matter your dietary needs, they’ve got you covered.

The best part? Sitting down afterward at the long table to enjoy what you’ve all cooked together. Just enjoy a good meal, great people, and stories that last long after the plates are cleared. Love the idea of cooking without rules? Jam here!

While the iconic sights are worth every bit of the hype, it’s these kinds of unique, immersive experiences that make the trip truly memorable and full of fun stories to share. So next time you’re in the Mother City, look beyond the checklist and try something that feels a little more you.
