I’m a big fan of Kimpton hotels and each stay at one seems to reinforce that opinion. Aside from excellent locations, cool amenities and stylish design, the company seems to be quite adroit at hiring great people. Everyone you encounter, from the front desk staff to housekeepers in the hallways, are geniuly happy and eager to help enrich the guest stay experience.
Aside from all that, they have probably the best pet policy of any chain hotel. Every Kimpton is pet-friendly and there’s never an extra charge or pet fee. As an owner of a 100-pound German Shepherd, we also love how they have no dog size or breed restrictions, as many seemingly dog-friendly hotels do. In fact, they half-jokingly say if the pet will fit through your hotel room door, it’s welcome at the hotel.
The Kimpton Hotel Palomar Phoenix
We spent a very nice weekend at the Kimpton Hotel Palomar Phoenix, located in the newly developing DTPHX (downtown Phoenix) area. The boutique hotel is part of the CityScape complex, a massive, two-block entertainment zone development. Under normal, non-pandemic conditions, it’s filled with shops, restaurants, bars and clubs. The hotel is right across the street from Talking Stick Arena, where the Phoenix Suns play and they have a lot of big concerts, conventions and events.
Aside from very nice rooms and suites, the Hotel Palomar has a popular rooftop pool and lounge called the Lustre Rooftop Bar, which also serves food. There’s also the Blue Hound Kitchen & Cocktails located in the hotel. They have an extensive menu, hand-crafted cocktails and a curated beef program featuring rare and delicious steaks.
My Room
This video shows a tour of my room, which was a Premier King guestroom. King due to the king bed and Premier due to its location on the hotel’s top (10th) floor. Inside it was average-sized but filled with stylish yet functional furniture and work by local artists on the walls. The bed was very comfortable and we also liked the spa-like feel of the bathroom. We loved the Frette Italian linens on the bed and the Frette bathrobes as well. One request, this hotel and every other hotel should provide slippers for guests.
Getting There
To get to the Kimpton, we drove the 2021 MINI John Cooper Works Countryman ALL4. This fun, functional and fast micro-SUV is powered by a BMW-built TwinPower turbo engine with 301 horsepower. It also has four doors, making it easy to bring our doggy on the road trip, and a cargo area behind the rear seats for all our luggage.
