On the Red Rocks

Piedras Rojas, Atacama Desert

One of the most otherworldly of Atacama's high altitude salt lagoons, Piedras Rojas has a minty green lake that you reach by hiking across Martian-red rocks. The hills are pastel in colour, due to the dusting of borax, making the windward side appear sunny and the leeward side in shadow. The clear sky and bright midday sun is deceptive; the altiplano winds blow cold, forcing me to retreat into the van, where I took this photo. Hardier (or better-clothed) people dot the landscape, providing the necessary scale to appreciate the vastness of the high plains.
