A DAY WITH LEMAYAN, THE CHIEF’S SON

Maasai Village in Kenya

I met Lemayan, the Chief’s son and a Maasai warrior, on a warm morning in Kenya. What I expected to be a simple village visit became the most meaningful moment of my trip. He walked me through his community, showed me how his people read the land, and spoke openly about the balance between tradition and the modern world. Inside his family’s home, we talked about leadership, heritage, and the future of the Maasai. Before I left, he placed a red shuka over my shoulders and gifted me his traditional knife in its red scabbard—a gesture of respect I’ll never forget. Travel gives you wildlife and scenery, but sometimes it offers something deeper: a human connection that stays with you long after you’ve left the place behind.
