Four Mile Old West Town

Strolling through the gates of Four Mile Old West Town is like entering into the long-ago world of the late 1800s in the American Old West. Created four miles west of Custer, South Dakota, this “ghost town” is located on the site of the former Moss City.

Wandering in and out of the nearly 50 buildings, it is easy to get caught up in the spirit of the bygone days. The homes and businesses are open to visitors and the historical artifacts are available for close inspection and interactive use. One can sit at the piano in the saloon playing a few notes, lie on the doctor’s couch while exploring the tools of doc’s “house call” bag or even sit on the bottom bunk in a claustrophobic cage of a jail to experience the none-too-opulent accommodations offered to the outlaws of the day.

After a few hours studying farming tools, home “appliances,” medicinal collections and transportation options of the day, visitors can acquire a richer understanding of the physical and mental stamina it took to survive the Old West.
