Senior editor Leslie Forsberg writes this month's editor's note.

Editor's Note

The late English novelist Aldous Huxley once said, “Never put off till tomorrow the fun you can have today.”

I couldn’t agree more! No matter the age — but especially for those of us who face bills, work deadlines and family crises on a regular basis — a touch of magic and a sprinkling of pixie dust will bring forth laughter and closeness that I’m convinced makes a difference in one’s overall quality of life.

My husband, daughter and I got to experience a bit of this magic on a recent family visit to Southern California’s Legoland, Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure, which you can read about in Realms of Fantasy.

The novelist Huxley was born in southern England, the birthplace of a number of famous British authors, including Jane Austen, who lived a century before Huxley. This month’s special section focuses on the historic villages, castles and verdant countryside of southern England, with stories including Jane Austen Country, A Yank in the Queen’s Court and Winchester: A Walk Back in Time.

In contrast to the tameness of the English landscape, in A Walk on the Wild Side, Sandra Scott learned about the plants, animals and nomadic people that make Malaysia’s Taman Negara National Park their home.

In an equally exotic locale, albeit nowhere near as lush, Graeme Down participated in an international conservation study in Russia’s rugged Altai region, and wrote about it in Searching for Snow Leopards.

This month’s issue also travels to Old San Juan, Puerto Rico; South Africa’s Robben Island; and the Outer Banks of North Carolina, among other locales, each a destination with a story to tell.

And, in the spirit of fun, Geoffrey Matesky goes undercover, bringing us the inside scoop of one family’s experience with the “Terminator” of timeshare sales reps, while on vacation in Orlando, Florida.

Happy … and fun … traveling!
