Next month is Christmas, but there
are already thousands of holiday lights adorning the skyscrapers here in Hong
Kong. For the past hour, I've been admiring this festive display from my bench
seat along the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront Promenade in Kowloon.
It's almost 8 p.m., but the area is still full of people —
lovers walking hand-in-hand along the water, vendors packing up their wares and
families out for a stroll. The humid air is chilly, but it seems to fit the
holiday mood, and no one seems to mind.
Hong Kong is not a destination you usually think of visiting
when it comes to the holidays. Yet it's a gorgeous place to celebrate the
season. This Chinese city, it seems, has broken many of my preconceptions. And
that's one of the things I love about travel — it opens your mind to new
things, revealing truths you never imagined.
This month, Go World Travel celebrates China with an
in-depth special section. James Dorsey visits the Shennong River, where he
travels with River Trackers. From there, Lori Hein takes us on a rich tour of
one of Beijing's tiny side streets, and Habeeb Salloum shows us China's famous
Terracotta Warriors.
From China, Go World Travel heads to Greece and into
Eastern Germany, where former communist villages now thrive in a free land.
Debby Merickels tells of her around-the-world journey, post 9/11, while Guylaine
Spencer gives us the inside tip of unique places to stay (ever spent the night
in jail — on purpose?).
And in this month's “Fascinating People” profile, Sarah
Carpenter introduces us to three unique individuals who call the remote mountain
town of Leadville, Colorado, (elevation 10,200 feet/3,109 m) home.
There are more than a dozen exciting destinations in this
month's issue. We hope you enjoy them!
Happy travels!
