Bothwell Lodge State Historic Site |
Atop a 120-foot (36.5 m) bluff north of town sits a regal 12,000-square-foot (1,115 m²) mansion once belonging to one of Sedalia’s largest benefactors, local attorney John Homer Bothwell. Bothwell had this summer residence, set on his Stoneyridge estate, constructed in four sections between 1897 and 1928. While it can
be seen from the nearby highway, you can only appreciate all this historic site has to offer up-close.
The 30-plus-room lodge sits atop three natural caves, one of which was used as the air-cooling system for the structure. You can tour the extravagant home, which still contains most of Bothwell’s original furnishings and artifacts. The original estate included 77 acres (0.3 square km²); since becoming a state park it has expanded to 247 acres (1 km²) that are filled with bike trails, picnic areas and beautiful landscapes to explore.
