For the Birds
For bird watchers, Alaska is one of the best destinations in the world. There are two major festivals in the spring. The Cooper River Delta Shorebird Festival, May 5-8, focuses on more than 5 million shorebirds, and 30 species, that stop over on their annual migration, including plovers, dusky Canada geese, trumpeter swans and re-necked phalarope (www.cordovachamber.com). On the same dates, the Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival, near Homer, features more than 50 different events from advanced ornithology workshops to art shows. An estimated 100 species of pelagic, coastal and woodland birds have been seen in one day during the festival (www.homeralaska.org/shorebird.htm).

And Baby Makes Three
For parents who want to travel with infants, there are an increasing number of supports on the market. Here’s an item created by a real mom — not a laboratory of scientists. It’s the Diaperbridge, a portable changing table that fits any bathroom sink but also fits into any diaper bag or suitcase. Once unfolded, the device forms a rigid platform on which to place the baby and an additional panel folds up to block the spigot when the product is used on a sink top. For more information, go to www.diaperbridge.com.
