Where in the World?

Guess this location and win a free travel book!

The white paint reflects the bright sunlight so that I almost have to avert my eyes. I squint, but the temple is not a mirage. Surrounded by tall Aspen trees and murmuring mountain streams, the stupa (meaning “mound” in Sanskrit) seems a little out of place here.

This is not Tibet. Expensive SUV’s are parked in the lot of the adjacent meditation center. Picnic tables are set up on the grass, and the sounds of American English float in the air. People come here for spiritual retreats, esoteric classes and Yoga lessons. The dome-shaped monument has been built as an “expression of the aspiration for peace, harmony and equanimity for all beings.” Colorful reliefs adorn the four portals. A giant Buddha sculpture sits inside. Rising 108 feet (33 m) from its foundation, the stupa was initiated in 1988 and consecrated in 2001. The Dalai Lama sent a letter of encouragement. His Holiness has not yet visited, but pop idol, Sting, came by to visit the largest and most elaborate example of Buddhist architecture on the North American continent.

Where am I?
