O
n some days, the fog is so thick that this giant statue seems to serve as a beacon perched high on the cliffs of a busy shoreline. Down below, the waves crash on the beach as enamored couples embrace at the cliff’s edge, peering into the ocean, eyes glazed with love’s entrance. Like most other public parks in this coastal capital city, local couples display their love for one another on a daily basis with little modesty or regard for passersby.

Sculpted by South American artist Victor Delfín, this massive monument is an exception to the common theme of most local parks that honor those who have either died or triumphed in times of war. As a reflection of this South American country’s passionate side, the seaside park is devoted solely to lovers. Various romantic quotes are embedded in the mosaic designs decorating the tiled walls and benches surrounding the statue.

Late in the afternoon, usually on the weekends, recently married couples arrive in full bride and groom attire immediately after their religious ceremony to finish off their wedding day with a kiss beneath the sculpture.

An inscription at the site declares: “Love is the meeting of the flesh and the spirit.” Visiting this park with your significant other may be the initial appeal, but to go alone is quite an experience as well. There is love in the air for everyone to feel and the beautiful views make a visit here unforgettable.

Where am I?

Answer to the August 2005 “Where in the World” Contest

Last month’s mystery destination was Chiang Rai, Thailand. Thanks to all those who wrote in with guesses. The winner drawn this month was Anke of Sonoma, California. She selected a copy of Paris Underground, by Caroline Archer with Alexandre Parré. The book showcases the surprising artwork that can be found in the tunnels and quaries under the City of Lights. Congratulations, Anke!
