A Photo Essay through Canada
I
arrived by ferry
in the cool predawn hours of an October morning. Rising out of the mist,
just below the clouds, was the rocky isle that is
Newfoundland. This province has been part of Canada since 1949, but it's
European roots go much further back. The first explorers arrived in the
1400s.
Newfoundland is the eastern-most community in North
America, and a
small-town feel permeates the island. Newfoundland and Labrador
combined have a population of only 531,000 residents, spread out over a landmass that ranks
fourth in size behind the American states of Alaska, Texas,
and California. In a land with so much room to breathe, it's easy to fall under the spell of “The Rock.”
