An art vendor takes a break. |
Most visitors spend their time in Old Town (Vanalinn), a section of Tallinn dating back to the 13th century. The charming area, full of ancient buildings and winding alleyways, is one of the best preserved medieval towns in Europe.
The Old Town is divided into two sections: the Upper Town in Toompea Hill, which was once home to the local gentry, and the Lower Town, which surrounds Town Hall Square. Both neighborhoods are easy to explore on foot, although you'll need good walking shoes to handle the cobblestone streets.
The city’s old defense moat is now a beltway of green parks that surrounds the Old Town.
